Topic: Not Fitting for the Unfit (3)
No audio available for this study. Background
As we continued with our study on “Not Fitting for the Unfit” last week, we considered the things that are fitting, yet not fitting for the unfit. These are things that have been set apart for holy use/purpose, things that are sacred, or things that have been dedicated for divine service; and things that are precious and of inestimable value.
We saw that these fitting things which are not fitting for the unfit include; the word of God (including godly counsel and prophecy); tithes, offerings, first fruits, and vows; people who have been saved and sanctified; wisdom and understanding; our faith; a virtuous woman; and, the kingdom of God. Others not specifically mentioned in the course of the study, and yet are holy include, the names of God; God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; Holy Communion; and marriage.
We saw that because of the lethargy and levity with which many so-called Christians handle holy and precious things, it has become imperative that we recognize these things with a view to knowing what not to give to those considered unfit. These are people who do not believe in Jesus Christ as God and Saviour (unbelievers), people who once believed in Christ but have now turned back from believing (backsliders), people who say that there is no God (fools), people who scoff at the things of God (scorners), and wicked people, to mention a few. We noted that whilst these fitting things are of tremendous value to the righteous, they are useless in the hands of the Unfit, and can bring harm to those who give these things to the Unfit.
We concluded by counselling that those who are believers in Christ, should make the pursuit of holy and precious things their top priority, lest they turn to seeking after unholy and worldly things, and become unfit (‘dogs’ and ‘swine’).
Scripture Text(s)
Matthew 7:6
Tonight, we shall conclude our study by looking at the implications of holy and precious things and whether or not we would have access to them. We pray that the Holy Spirit will make these implications plain to us so that we can avoid being lethargic in our spiritual walk, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
What happens when the Unfit desire things that are fitting? How does God treat us when He has fitting things to distribute?
Proverbs 17:16; James 1:5-8; Proverbs 2:1-13; 1:7; 23:9; 13:20; 14:7; 3:11-12; 9:7-9; 15:12; 19:25; 21:11; 29:1; 1 Kings 1:5-6; Hebrews 12:7-13; Proverbs 26:1; Matthew 15:22-28; Mark 5:10-13; Ecclesiastes 7:26; Proverbs 22:14; 19:14; 18:22; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18; 1 Timothy 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-11; 2 Kings 5:20-27; 1 Timothy 5:22; Psalm 15:1-5; 24:3-5; Revelation 22:11-15; 1 Peter 1:4-5; 2 Peter 1:5-11.
Conclusion
Fools don’t value wisdom, so, no matter how fervently they may ask for, or seek after wisdom, they will not get it, because God will not give what is precious to ‘swine’. Likewise, we are counselled to avoid keeping company with fools, lest we learn their ways. Also, scorners hate those who correct and rebuke them, so we are encouraged not to give them counsel. However, when scorners are rebuked or punished, it is for the good of those who may not learn otherwise.
We have also seen that certain things are just not fitting for certain people, and that certain things fit certain people. Miracles are not for people who refuse to manifest faith in God (whether they be believers or not). Demons cannot possess people who are in right standing with God; they can only go into ‘swine’. Immoral women can only trap men who have offended God, because those who are following after God will be marvellously helped to avoid their entrapment. A good and prudent wife is a gift from God and only the righteous man who has found favour with God can be given such; no wine-bibber or wife-beater can be given such a woman as wife. It is unfitting for marriage or partnership in business to be between a believer and an unbeliever because they don’t have anything in common. Ministry is not for people who are seeking to make money or become famous, neither is it for lazy and immoral people, so, church leaders need to maintain due diligence before ordaining people. Heaven is not a place that people can walk into just because they attend church services; it is a place specially reserved for the uncompromisingly righteous; and, God’s inheritance/rewards are kept for such people—that is, those who have in addition built on their faith and developed themselves in the things of God.
Have you been waiting on God for a holy or precious thing, and it is not forthcoming? Perhaps, it is appropriate for you to look inward and do a personal evaluation to see if you are fit to receive such.
