Topic: The Believer’s Responsibilities (2): Prayer (9b)

No audio available for this study.

Background
Last week we did an overview on “Give us this day our daily bread” and said that it is a prayer that takes cognizance of God, our Father, as our Source and Sustenance; indicates that we are to ask for our needs, not our wants; our necessities, not luxuries; and, our attitude should be one of humility.

We noted that “our daily bread” goes beyond physical needs and extends to our spiritual needs, especially the word of God, which is our daily bread of life. We said that also that since God has us covered on the bare necessities (food and clothing), we should find contentment in these, and focus on our spiritual necessities in prayer.

We said further that our praying should be every day; not once a year, neither once a month, nor once a week. Also, we noted that even though God asks us to ask for anything, we are to ask responsibly. Again, we said that petition prayer should involve ASKing (Asking, Seeking, and Knocking), and that we should not give up easily, but keep on ASKing until our joy is full.

Scripture Text(s)
Matthew 6:11
Tonight, we shall begin to consider what we should be asking in prayer. May the Holy Spirit help us to pray as we ought to, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Some of our vital ‘daily bread’ go beyond our physical needs. And since the bare necessities of our existence (food and clothing) have been taken care of by God, as we have earlier noted, we shall be focusing more on our spiritual needs. For most Christians this aspect of life is evidently missing, and is very much impactful of the physical issues in our lives, hence its significance.
Matthew 6:25-33; 13:44-46; Acts 3:1-8; James 4:1-4; 1:5-8; Proverbs 2:3-10; 1 Kings 3:4-28; Ecclesiastes 7:11-12; Ephesians 1:15-19; Philippians 4:6-7; Psalm 37:7-11; 55:22; John 14:27; 16:33; Luke 21:12-15; Acts 2:1-4; Ephesians 6:18-20; Colossians 4:3; 2 Thessalonians 3:1-2; Acts 4:29, 31, 33.

Conclusion
It is clear from our brief study tonight that seeking the kingdom of God is the key to obtaining many of the physical things that we would be seeking for in our own strength. We have also seen that many of us don’t even know what we really need. And where we think we know what we need, they are invariably motivated by self, which brings frustration to us, when these prayers are not answered.

Among the things that we should be asking God for on a daily basis are wisdom, peace, and utterance. Let us now go to God and ask for these things.
