Background
We opened the teachings on The Message of the Teachings on the Mount with a poser as to whether or not we are among the multitude. This derived from the nature of the multitude, which includes the fact that they follow the Lord, but not necessarily His message; and their commitment is usually to themselves, and not to the things of the Lord. We noted that the multitude is a countless, faceless, and nameless group of people who band together to fulfil their own desires and goals, which are as varied and complex as they are. We also noted that they are variously referred to as people, crowd, throng, or mixed multitude.

We noted further that the Lord had a way with the multitude. Although He was compassionate toward them, and usually healed, fed, and even taught them, His commitment was never toward them but toward those few who are committed to Him.

Tonight, we will see the other group of people, the few ones to whom the Lord is committed, with a view to identifying what marks them as distinct from the multitude. Two major marks are identified in the scripture text, and we shall be considering one of them tonight. May the Holy Spirit help us identify where we belong, as well as help us to exhibit the marks of a disciple, in Jesus name, Amen.

Scripture Text(s)
Matthew 5:1-2

Our scripture text states, in part, "and when He was set, His disciples came unto Him." One major identifying mark of a true disciple is that he is always where the Master is. And when the Master calls or sends, the disciple heeds!
Mark 3:13; John 12:26; 15:5-8; 14:3; 17:24; 2 Corinthians 5:8; Philippians 1:23; Luke 10:1-17; Acts 10:19-23; 13:1-4; 16:6-10.

Conclusion
Discipleship costs you everything. Once the Master calls, the disciple instantly heeds the call; and where He sends, he goes whatever the cost. This is why He asks those who would want to follow Him (those who want to be His disciples) to count the cost (Luke 14:25-33; 9:59-62; 2 Corinthians 11:23-33; 12:15)

Have you counted the cost of being a disciple of the Lord Jesus? If not, tonight is the night when you must count the cost, not with a view to withdrawing or backing out, but with a view to pressing forward in your quest for true discipleship with greater determination and vigour!
