Topic: The Believer’s Responsibilities (2): Prayer (9d)

Background
Last week we saw that other things we should pray for daily as much as possible include, sanctification, knowing God more, having the fullness of joy, the fulfillment of God's promises in our lives, and a glimpse into things to come.

We saw that praying for sanctification is highly essential because, it is the second work of grace which the Holy Spirit does in a believer; salvation being the first. We noted that sanctification is what helps us to overcome sin, as well as make us ready to serve in the house of God. Knowing God more in an experiential way is essential because it is eternal life. The fullness of joy represents the presence of God in our lives, as well as security in Him. We also saw that even though God has given us promises, He expects us to mention those promises back to Him in prayer; and hence the need for this being part of our daily prayer. Finally, we noted that we should ask God to reveal things to come to us, so that our hearts can be stayed on Him when things are not going well.

Tonight we shall conclude by considering one final, but extremely vital daily prayer. May the Holy Spirit open our eyes to this truth, in Jesus' name, Amen.

Scripture Text(s)
Matthew 6:11; Luke 11:13
If we ask for the Holy Spirit, God will give Him to us. Many do not ask for the Holy Spirit, because they do not know His value and significance; and others do not even realise that nothing they do counts if the Holy Spirit is not involved.
If the believer in Jesus Christ is to amount to anything of significance in the kingdom of God, he must of necessity ask for the Holy Spirit on a daily basis.
Acts 10:38; 1:6-8, 13-14; 2:1ff; 4:23-31; 1 Corinthians 2:1-5; Acts 5:32; Romans 8:9; John 7:37-39; 16:7-15; Acts 1:2; 2 Peter 1:20-21; John 14:15-18, 26; 1 John 2:20-21, 26-27; Galatians 5:16-23; Matthew 4:1-11; Acts 13:2, 4; Romans 8:14; 1 Corinthians 12:1-3; Romans 15:16.

Conclusion
If there is one prayer that we must of necessity pray on a daily basis, it is that the Holy Spirit of God will be with us and in us, to lead, guide, and direct us in the way that we should go. The Holy Spirit is so vital to the believer, that without Him we cannot be born again, we cannot be called children of God, we cannot minister in the power of God, and we cannot know truth, and so on. Indeed without the Holy Spirit in our lives, we cannot do anything that is spiritual and of eternal value!
