Topic: The Essentials of Witnessing (1)
Background
Last week, we discussed "<em>The Essence of Our Testimonies</em>" and noted that our testimonies:
 Should point to the Lord Jesus Christ—the One who made the testimony possible; not a pastor, church, programme, etc.
 Should provide a platform to preach Christ and must not be used to advertise a pastor, church, programme, etc.
 Should place us in a position to persevere and preserve our faith in Christ and walk with God
 Should put us in a proper frame to meaningfully praise/glorify God and Christ.
Giving a testimony out of fear of recurrence of what you were delivered from is unscriptural and deceptive! Testimonies are essentially about Christ and not a man nor the man’s programmes!
Scripture Text(s)
Acts 3:11-26
As the now walking one-time lame man held on to Peter and John, people in the temple came running toward them and gathered around. Seeing the opportunity, Peter opened his mouth and began to preach Christ to them. We shall, through the verses of our text, discuss witnessing.
Reading <strong>Acts 1:8</strong> in the NKJV and Living Bible translations, we can define witnessing as what we do when we speak to someone or a group of people about Jesus Christ and what He did for mankind to bring them to eternal salvation. A witness, scripturally, confirms and affirms what he saw, heard, knows, or has experienced of the Lord Jesus Christ (<strong>1 John 1:1-3, NKJV, LB; Psalm 34:8</strong>). Witnessing is thus about testifying about Jesus Christ—His life, death, resurrection (<strong>John 15:26-27</strong>). With that out of the way, let us now look at what constitutes witnessing.
Luke 24:46-49; John 14:26; 15:26-27; 16:8-11, 12-14; Acts 3:11-12; 2:12ff; 8:3-5, 26-32; Ephesians 5:14-16; 2 Timothy 4:2; Acts 3:12-13a; 1 Corinthians 2:1-5; Acts 3:13b-15a; Matthew 23:29-32; Romans 3:9-18; 5:12, 14; Acts 2:22-23, 24-32; 3:15; Romans 5:6-8; 1 Corinthians 15:7-8; Ephesians 1:17; Titus 2:13b-14; Romans 4:25; 1 Corinthians 15:17.
Conclusion
Witnessing is more than carrying a Bible and opening and reading scripture to people who care nothing for it. Therefore, we must be prepared to tell people about Jesus in simple language which the hearer can relate to but which must include spotlighting their sinfulness and God’s provision for pardoning them and saving them from the eternal judgment in hell! This we must do with passion!
