Topic: Now That the Holy Spirit is in You (5.1): He Will Speak to You

Last week, we started to see the other ways in which the Holy Spirit becomes involved in the lives of believers in Christ when He comes to indwell them. One of the ways, we saw, is the Holy Spirit as the believer’s Divine Personal Instructor. As the Divine Personal Instructor, the Holy Spirit is like a private tutor, which some well-to-do families acquire for their children. The Holy Spirit is, however, more than just a private tutor in that He has a bond-relationship with the believer through the redemption of Christ; hence He is very much concerned in the believer’s well-being through giving of instructions. Also, the Holy Spirit lives within the believer, giving the believer the benefit of not needing to travel to a location to meet with Him, neither does the believer have to wait for the Holy Spirit to arrive at a particular location because—He is always there!
We saw that in His role as Divine Personal Instructor, the Holy Spirit teaches the believer all things; guides the believer into all truth; and reminds the believer of the things he has been taught by the Holy Spirit. And because the Holy Spirit is in us as our own Divine Personal Instructor, there shouldn’t be any ignorant Christian in the kingdom of God. Furthermore, in His role as Divine Personal Instructor, the Holy Spirit prepares us for the challenges of daily life on earth, and to be able to face the temptations of the devil and overcome them.
As our private Teacher, the Holy Spirit instructs us in the word of God, interprets the scriptures to us, and gives us illustrations thus, enabling us to better understand and appreciate all things that are needful for our development and growth as children of God. As our personal Guide into all truth, the Holy Spirit progressively leads, gently but firmly directs, and enables and encourages us to walk in the paths of truth and righteousness, as well as to practically live out the word of God in our daily lives. As our Reminder, the Holy Spirit recounts and rehearses things to us so that we don’t forget God and what God expects of us; and, He helps us to recall the things that He has taught us in time past, at the time when they are most needed, so that we are able to overcome the adversary when he comes to challenge and tempt us.
But for all these wonderful things that the Holy Spirit comes into our lives to do, unless we are teachable, and apply what we have been taught in every area of our lives, the teachings, guidance, and reminders of the Holy Spirit, will do us no good; and we would be unable to overcome the devil when he tempts us. Therefore, as good students, our role is to yield completely to the Holy Spirit’s instructions, prodding, and reminders! In this way, we are guaranteed good success here on earth, and in eternity, eternal life.
Scripture Text(s)
John 16:13-15
The scripture text above reveals to us that when the Holy Spirit comes to indwell a believer, He does not stay dormant and dumb; rather, He speaks to the believer, guiding him into all truth (which we expounded last week), and, giving him necessary and relevant information. It is our prayer that we shall be open to all that the Holy Spirit has to say to us tonight, and will respond positively to His words, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
When the Holy Spirit comes to indwell you, He does not speak jargon, neither does He speak of things that are of no value to you, nor does He give His own message; instead, He gives you the message the Lord wants you to have, which includes information and warnings about future events, as well as messages that will increase your knowledge of God.
Acts 1:1-8; 8:29-30; 11:1-18; 16:6-10; 18:1-11; 13:1-3; 11:28; 20:23; 21:4, 8-11; 1 Corinthians 2:9-13; Deuteronomy 29:29; 1 Timothy 4:1; 2 Peter 2:1-3; 1 Corinthians 12:7-8, 10c.
Conclusion
In the Holy Spirit, the believer in Christ has a complete resource for his development and growth in spiritual things, because everything that the believer needs to live a full and godly life, the Lord Jesus Christ provides through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit leads and directs us in our walk (mannerism), and in His work (ministry). The Holy Spirit’s leading and direction may be in the form of information, or instruction or both, and, it may come as an encouragement, a warning, a discussion, etc.; in which He is telling us about what He wants us to do, where He wants us to go, how He wants us to do certain things, etc. The Holy Spirit speaks to the believer in different ways, either, directly (which can be by an audible voice, an inner voice in the spirit of the believer, an impression in the spirit, a dream, a vision, a trance, etc.), or indirectly (essentially, through other believers, and sometimes through unbelievers, or through circumstances). The Holy Spirit’s speech to us can come as the spiritual gifts of word of wisdom, word of knowledge, and discerning of spirits.
When the Holy Spirit speaks to the believer, the focus is always about glorifying the Father and Christ, and the things of the kingdom of God, including the things to come, that is, future events. Even when it appears that His speech is personal, the undertone of such personal conversation will be tied to the Father, the Son, and the kingdom of God. The Holy Spirit has been given to indwell each believer in Christ, so that the believer will not be ignorant about the things of God and of His kingdom. Therefore, as a believer, you don’t need to go and seek men to tell you about the Father, the Son, the future, the things happening around you, etc.—the Holy Spirit will tell you about those things as at when it becomes necessary. You don’t need to heap for yourself, teachers and prophets (2 Timothy 4:3-4); the Holy Spirit will either lead you to the appropriate teacher(s) or send people to you as the need arises; and when this happens, you will know of a certainty that He has indeed sent them to you—you will not be guessing, for the Holy Spirit will bear witness within you that He has sent them to you, as well as use a preponderance of His message by the mouth of two or three witnesses to confirm to you if necessary (1 John 4:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21)!
